throwback weekend. many of the xfinity teams taking part withpaint schemes from the past honoring the great drivers, personalities that make up the historyof the sport. today the young stars of xfinity clash withthe cup regulars in a vfw sport clips help a hero 200. >>> the following nbc sports program is broughtto you in living color. >> and welcome once again, i'm rick allenalongside jeff burton, steve letarte. jeff burton's bow tie is turkey feathers. >> turkey pet sneers and steve actually tiedhis own bow time.

that's the fun thing about coming to darlingtonand the throwback theme, so much history at this racetrack. >> it really is. this racetrack is the perfect place to havea throwback weekend. you talk about daytona being the birthplaceof nascar, this racetrack was built ten years before the daytona international speedway. so much history here. when this place was built people thought whenhe built it he was crazy, there is no way you can make it work putting in over a mileracetrack, paving it, having a paved track.

what a special racetrack. for these drivers and teams to go back intohistory and pay attention to what happened well before they got here and give respectto those guys is pretty special. >> steve, how the limited track time becauseof the tropical storm that went through they were only on the track less than an hour thismorning. >> because of the tropical storm there wasno qualifying, the field was set by points and they only had 50 minutes of practice. ten of these drivers have never raced at darlington,31 have never raced since the track was paved before so this old pavement is going to bevery difficult, very tricky and it's a short

race, only 147 laps. teams are going to have to figure out thetrack quickly to find success. >> jeff, has to be an advantage for cup regulars, especially denny hamlin, he has won here four times, the rest of the filed has only wonhere one time and that was jeff green. >> this rainout and qualifying put some goodteams towards the back. you think about kyle larson starting 13thcharging his way through the field that's going to be fun to watch. >> it's limited because he only has 147 lapsto get there. it's a short race, it's going to be a fastrace, let's get it undeway with prerace ceremonies,

we go track si now. >>> ladies and gentlemen, please rise andremove your hats and the south carolina international guard from mcintyre joint national guard basepresents our nation's colors. the nascar family mourns the loss of bettyjane france who passed away earlier this week. her love, compassion and leadership impactedmillions of lives through her tireless work, including with the nascar foundation. our thoughts and prayers are with the francefamily and the many lives she touched through the years. please join us as we observe a moment of silence.

[ moment of silence ]>>> please remain standing as dr. bill wur 'tis, pastor of cornerstone baptist churchin darlington gives our invocation. >> let's pray together. gracious father we give you thanks for thisbeautiful day. the opportunity that we have to enjoy it togetherhere at the track, too tough to tame. father, we pray that you would show favorto the drivers, to their teams, to keep them safe as they compete today. as we enjoy this race together help us toremember that every good gift comes from you. we ask it in jesus name.

amen. >> amen. >>> here to perform our national anthem pleasewelcome the cooker college men's vocal ensemble. o say, can you see by the dawn's early lightwhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? whose broad stripes and bright stars throughthe perilous fight o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantlystreaming? and the rockets' red glare the bombs burstingin air gave proof through the night that our flagwas still there

oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yetwave o'er the land of the freeand the home of the brave? >>> beautiful saturday afternoon for saturdayafternoon racing with the lady in black. >>> okay. we agree. we're different. we have no ball or goal to put it in. we pass but we don't hand off or punt andwe never call a time out. we don't win unless we finish and we don'talways finish.

this is no game because we don't play, werace. >>> the guys who are the regulars in the series,we are trying to make our name and get to that sprint cup series. >> kyle larson is going to win in the sprintcup series. >> i think we're all trying to fight for thesame goal and i think that's everybody's mindset going into these races. >> there's no room for error. >> the greatest test comes from the racetrack. >> chase elliott wins at his first try atdarlington.

>>> welcome back to darlington raceway aswe get ready to kick off the throwback weekend with xfinity series racing. for more on the story lines we will be followinglet's go to mike massaro. >> bubba wallace just climbed inside his racecar. moments ago he had a lengthy conversationwith newly elected hall of famer mark martin, a great guy to talk to when it comes to thisracetrack, he has eight xfinity series wins here. today wallace pays tribute to martin withhis special paint scheme, a scheme martin ran in 1990 and 1991.

marty. >> mike, you are not going to have a problemfinding kyle larson today with the purple and yellow colors of country music star andnascar driver marty robbins. his name would have been right here, the 777would have been across the door. kyle told me i love this scheme. you will be able to see us on the racetrack. expect kyle larson to go to the front thisafternoon. >> justin allgaier's cherry red 7 car paystribute to his sponsor's past. although it looks nice and pretty now it hada darlington stripe on it earlier from practice

this morning. purely cosmetic, they fixed it up. i doubt justin cares what his car looks likeas long as it's being seen in victory lane today. >>> kelly, over 285 starts in 12 years, richardchildress often ran a paint scheme similar to the one paul menard had today. it was for the crc high performance chemicalscompany and the red and white are emblematic of what that sponsor had while it was on theircar. it's time to fire the engines.

>> and now for the most famous words in motorsportsplease welcome your grand marshal, commander in chief for veterans foreign wars, brianduffy. >> drivers, start your engines! >> yes, sir. >> back man turner overdrive couldn't havesaid it any better, you ain't seen nothing yet. darlington throwback weekend kicks off next.iused to ask if you could hear me now, but i switched to sprint. their network reliability is now within 1%of verizon.

finally the driver turns to the guys nextto him and says 'did you leave the brats on the grill again?' and he goes 'yup.' 'might as well put them to good use.' i don't know how it ends. there could be an explosion maybe. and that's a commercial made the johnsonvilleway. >> row seven, kyle larson and darrell wallacejr., darrell wallace jr. has the mark martin throwback car. >> row eight ryan reed starting next to blakekoch. >> two more throwback schemes make up rownine, ryan sieg and dakoda armstrong in the davey allison throwback. >> row ten jeremy clements the family wasinvolved with nascar and his throwback scheme based on the 1957 chevy black widow. and let's see if we can chat with erik joneson the radio. jeff.

>> hey, eric, it's jeff i'm in the nbc boot. are you with us? >> yeah, 10-4. >> well, you have never raced at darlingtonbefore. tell us what it's like getting ready to startyour first race with only 50 minutes of practice. >> well, i'm not really sure what to expectso 50 minutes of practice isn't a whole lot for a first time at any track but especiallyhere. so i'm just trying to figure it out as wego, but i think the dee walt camry is pretty good, we've got good speed for sure, startinga little further back than we want to.

hopefully we can stay up on it all day. >> erik, thank you for taking time to talkwith us today, good luck. >> 10-4. thank you. >> erik jones one of three drivers with winsalready on the 2016 season. we will ride along with a few drivers includingthe 16 of ryan reed, he has the lilly diabetes in car camera, will start 15th today. darrell wallace jr. with the ford on board starts 14th.

brennan poole has the d.c. solar in car camera and will start this race11th and just a bit closer to the front starting tenth with the advance auto parts on boardcamera is erik jones. today's aerial coverage provided by our partnersat smithfield foods. this aerial coverage will give you a goodperspective of the unique look of this racetrack, an egg-shaped mile and a third track. also you get a bird's-eye view of this racetrack, kind of what the spotters have when they're watching this racetrack as we listen intothe 62's audio. >> and are you good with numbers or do youwant me to give you car colors today with

the different colors? >> probably whichever one is easier for you. it might be tougher for you if you went fornumber right now so if you have to do color that's fine. >> as far as the numbers are concerned i wasn'tsure if you were familiar with them. just trying to help you out. >> that was spotter coverage presented byliberty mutual insurance, helping drivers worry less. i'm not sure if brendan was worrying moreor less after hearing that information.

it will be difficult for spotters, difficultfor the drivers as we take a look at the race analysis, 147 laps and, steve, this one isa sprint. 200 miles, pit road speed 45 miles per hourand we look at the fuel window, 60 to 63 laps, tires probably won't last that long, though. >> exactly. they might last that long physically but thesedrivers will be screaming for tires well before lap 60. they lose so much grip on this old south carolinaasphalt. >> there will be a competition caution atlap 25, that is because of the limited amount

of time that they have had on the track, again, just 50 minutes earlier today because of the storms that passed through. a big difference on the front row as far aslaps led. denny hamlin, he has led 448 laps here. paul menard, he's led no laps at darlington. >> i think this competition caution reallychanges the game for this first run because you know on lap 25 the caution is coming outso you don't save anything. you're going to go and run as hard as youcan as soon as they drop the green flag. some drivers at a racetrack like this whereit eats tires up won't necessarily go as hard

the first three or four or five laps to tryto save a little bit of tire to make it last longer at the end of the run but now knowingit's a 25-lap run you will see these guys pushing hard as soon as the flag falls. >> you can watch every xfinity series racewith the nbc sports app and get closer with additional camera angles, driver stats, trackinformation. it's available on mobile, tablet and connectedtvs, you can download the app and find out more at nbcsports.com/live. great assistance, or assisted while you arewatching this race. it is throwback weekend.

there's bobby allison. hall of famer. there are 17 hall of famers here this weekendthat will be enjoying the race with us. >> a great driver but also a great innovator. had a lot to do with the advancement of theserace cars, making these race cars drive better. he could do both, he could work on them, designand them and also drive them. >> bobby allison 84 wins, fourth all timeas far as the wins list. jeff gordon just passed he and darrell waltrip, moved up to third behind david pearson and of course the king.

those are sprint cup wins as we get readyto kick off the xfinity series race in this >> turn one here is always very exciting,we talk about how narrow it is just running by yourself, now these xfinity drivers willhave to work it out two by two going into turn one. >> call by menard to take the bottom. he has denny hamlin on the outside, let'ssee if he can beat him to one. >> paul menard on the inside, everyone standing, anticipating the green flag. it's in the air. we're racing from darlington!

>> a huge jump by paul menard. denny hamlin all the way back to fourth. >> a little bit different the preferred lineat darlington, right up against the wall. we'll see how quickly they move up to thewall and how many can make the bottom line work. >> paul menard out in front, elliott sadler, daniel suarez, denny hamlin, justin allgaier in the top five. >> suarez has been able to move up. has grabbed third away from denny hamlin whowas up on the front row.

allgaier behind him. >> we already see some interesting looks, this 22 driven by ryan blaney this weekend, that's a little unique, we don't normallysee line blaney this this penske xfinity car but it will give him more laps at a trickyracetrack. >> that front row didn't get going and thathurt blaney as well. he started fourth but is now running in sixth. >> you already see the interesting groove. you see right in the middle of one and tworight against the wall as they drive into turn three as you mentioned, steve, many differentgrooves, run the very bottom, run the very

top. you see a lot of pavement, there is a lotof pavement in this racetrack but you can't use it all. these guys will use every bit they can, though. >> the apron is huge at this racetrack andalmost looks like it's part of the racetrack but where they run is very narrow. >> right now you see blaney trying to makea move on the 7 of allgaier. not a good place to pass leaving turn twounless you have position in the middle of one and two.

allgaier a little loose off of three. let's see if blaney can take advantage ofit. >> you can see how you can set up to makea pass at a track like darlington, he will run a little low in the middle of three andfour, try to get that good run on corner exit. if he can get side-by-side on front stretchyou would expect the 7 to concede the position but ryan blaney is unable to do it this lap. >> you talked about how much ryan blaney coulduse the experience at this racetrack. jerry bones said the same thing, this is theone he wanted to run in xfinity, his only xfinity race finished last, his only cup racefinished 30th.

laps will help this young driver a lot tonight. >> ryan blaney continuing to try to learnin this sport and he's doing an excellent job. he also runs full-time in the cup series. now kyle larson in the 42, a week ago gothis first sprint cup series win at michigan and trailing behind him the 62 of brendangaughan>> guys, for kyle larson he said it's funny everybody thinks i'm good at darlingtonbecause i like to run the high line as there is a battle for the lead, rick. >> here comes elliott sadler, looks to theinside, trying to get by paul menard.

has the inside line, it might not be the preferredone, but he makes it work this time entering >> that was what i was talking about how youmake that pass into turn one, elliott sadler gets door to door with the 2 of paul menard. paul basically concedes the spot, he knowsdriving into turn one side-by-side is of no use to either of the cars especially so earlyin the race. >> as you enter turn one you go up the hill,up the banking toward the wall and two cars running side-by-side is very, very difficult. late in the race you tack that chance butat this point in the race you don't. you see it again right here, the 19 of suarezgiving the lane to hamlin once hamlin earned

the spot. >> those two are considered teammates forjoe gibbs racing. take another look, though, as they are twocar lengths apart now. this moments ago, the 44 justin allgaier -- j.j. yeley getting a little loose, and that isthe darlington stripe plus. >> that was a heavy contact with the wallat darlington. this is more what we are used to seeing outof a darling stripe, you see ryan reed here, he gets a little high. >> that might be a darlington kiss.

>> barely any contact here at darlington. >> you see if you ride along with him he wentto turn, leaving turn two, which is a crazy corner and just didn't get turned soon enoughand then the car didn't get turned, ultimately got into the wall. >> out in front it's elliott sadler leadingat the track too tough to tame. paul menard, denny hamlin, daniel suarez, justin allgaier the top five. z.. whenent spontaneously turns romantic, whypause to take a pill? or stop to find a bathroom?

blaney, i'm not sure if this is the lessonthat he was trying to learn while running the xfinity series race, but he got up intothe wall. >> that's part of the lesson. that's the lesson of darlington of where thelimit s you see right here he carries too much speed on corner entry, gets a littletoo high and into the wall. i won't say no damage but relatively low damagefor darlington. >> if you run here long enough and don't hitthe wall you are not trying hard enough. you have to push and if you push a littletoo much you are goings to get into the wall. you can't get into the wall every lap or everyrace but you have to every now and then use

a little too much racetrack and get in thewall. >> dave. >> a little bit loose on entry, a little bitloose on exit, that report just came down the line from elliott sadler who is remindedby his spotter by the way to race the racetrack, something you will hear all day long fromhis spotter. mike. >> if erik jones is hearing that very phraseover and over again, race the racetrack as jones told us just before the green flag hedidn't really care for where he was starting, tenth position, he has picked up two spotsbut hasn't made any more progress because

the balance of the race car not to his liking. >> i'm going to look all the way out of thethrottle for a solid three seconds to try to get it back to the bottom. let's keep learning here. >> as you heard the spotter say just keeplearning, they're trying to be as patient as possible waiting for the competition cautionbefore they go to work on this race car. >> kyle larson finds it funny that everyoneelse thinks the reason he is good at darlington is because he likes to run the high groove,a former dearth racer back in the tenth position. larson said when it's possible i like to runthree and four on the bottom, that's when

my car is usually the best. right now the car a little bit too tight torun the bottom in three and four, trying to gain some positions up through the field,he started 13th, running tenth. >> brandon jones has never raced here at darlingtonso he spent a lot of time talking to his teammates and on the similarity, he said the similarityhelped visually but the grip level was very different from what he experienced in practicethis morning. he said his front tires are at that time ringand he said i need more grip off both turns. >> great updates from pit road. and jeff burton i want you when we come backfrom break to explain race the racetrack from

younger drivers that are making their move. >> kevin harvick making a real aggressivemove in the middle of one and two. that's a line you can take but the guy onthe outside almost has to concede it once you get there, if not you enter turn two side-by-side. >> we see denny hamlin struggle off the initialstart in the outside lane, lose a few positions, then the car either gets better or he settlesin a groove, now he is putting pressure on the 2 of paul menard for second. although as i say that paul menard gets agreat turn one and distances himself a little bit from the 18 of denny hamlin.

>> trying to close the gap between he andthe 1 of elliott sadler. the top three drivers, elliott sadler, paulmenard and denny hamlin. and now the 88, kevin harvick, making hisway on to the apron and on to pit road early. >> he will be coming to you, guys. >> kevin harvick lost three positions on thatfour-tire pit stop was running fifth before he came to pit road. i don't see any damage on the right side. >> must be mechanical issue, marty. >> he said one word on the radio, it broke-- actually, that was two words but he said

the 2 of paul menard. >> menard got a little loose getting off turntwo and denny hamlin takes advantage of it going into three. he has that second spot but he's staying downon the bottom part of the racetrack. >> rick, we've done good, we keep puttingdenny hamlin in that 18 white toyota sport clips, looks just like his sprint cup car,the 11 car number. >> again, behind him paul menard in the 2. throwback paint schemes for both drivers. ryan blaney as well as kyle larson.

kyle larson just moments ago in that 42 knownfor running right up against the wall got loose and into the wall. >> guys, that's the second time kyle larsonhas hit the wall today. we've talked about how he actually likes torun the low line at darlington but the car was been so tight he's having to run thathigh line. he got a darlington stripe, that's what youcall it when you get into the wall like that on the first run of the day and they toldhim, listen, the right rear took a pretty big hit then it can't afford another one,it's already a second darlington stripe for kyle larson so far today.

>> and kyle larson with the throwback paintscheme from marty robins, country singer, had 17 number one hits. speaking of number one, elliott sadler outin front, denny hamlin and paul menard running second and third. >> denny hamlin not only running second butrunning the fastest laps of the racetrack pretty consistently trying to catch that 1of elliott sadler. >> and we've seen denny hamlin run a littlebit lower line, he's about a half a groove below what we've seen everyone else run andthen as quickly as i say that elliott sadler runs in the middle of the track and dennyhamlin runs right up against the wall.

>> it looks to me while elliott sadler mighthave got through the middle of the corner a little bit better that exit off the topline definitely seemed better for denny hamlin. >> elliott sadler doesn't want anyone to breakhis stride. did you know that chevrolet is the most awardedcar company two years in a row? oh wow. i'm surprised! chevy's coming out with some nice stuff. the design is great. i love it.

as he now has denny hamlin right behind him. hamlin once again has closed the gap for thelead. >> you can see hamlin running the very topin one and two and while the 1 of elliott sadler is running the bottom now this laptraffic, let's see if they play a role. side-by-side into one. >> elliott sadler having to check up justa bit because he's caught up with the lap traffic, but denny hamlin kept his momentumhigh. they are both working around joey gase inthe 52 and the gap that was about three car lengths is now down to two between elliottsadler and denny hamlin.

the xfinity series getting opportunities togo to the next level. >> yeah, and you've got guys like denny hamlinhave so much experience, you saw that move he made in the center of one and two, he wasable to turn underneath elliott sadler, find grip on the bottom of the racetrack. once you position yourself on the bottom ofthe racetrack, it's hard for the guy on the outside not to give you that spot becausethe exit of turn two gets very tight. if you have momentum and you can get -- youknow, get half of your car in front of him that's all you need because it now puts theoutside car in a tough spot. really nice move by denny hamlin.

>> early out of this race the driver of the88 kevin harvick spoke with marty snider just moments ago. >> one minute kevin harvick is making a passto go into the top five and all of a sudden the engine broke. any idea what happened? >> i think they said it broke a crankshaft. it was sudden. never had any smoke or anything, just lockedup. just got to thank everybody from armor andjr. motorsports.

they made some good adjustments to start passingcars and going in the right direction. i love racing here at darlington, i hate thatwe don't get to finish today because it's a lot of fun to drive and i always look forwardto this weekend. >> very short day for kevin harvick here atdarlington. >> short and unfortunate. kevin harvick hasn't had the luck that hehas had at other racetracks. never won in the xfinity series with thistrack. >> rick, we were showing the battle betweendenny hamlin and elliott sadler. back here the battle for fifth, sixth andseventh between allgaier, suarez and kyle

the one thing that comes into play here iswe still have not reached the halfway point of this race is the limited amount of tiresthat the xfinity series has. this was just a bit earlier with mario. >> just never going to work out at darlington, especially on corner entry. he found himself on top of the racetrack,on top of the other two cars and ended up getting into the debris and couldn't keepit off the wall. then right here, i couldn't see what startedthat contact, we see the 93 car on the outside of him, i'm not sure what started that, butagain, two cars trying to navigate a tough -- a tough narrow racetrack.

>> and the 93 of david starr we saw him outof shape, looks like the 2 of pretty major contact there. >> david starr did a really nice job not gettingin the wall. you saw how quickly that car turned right,he was able to get it turned back left and use the brakes properly and keep it out ofthe wall. >> so with the limited number of tires, steve,do you come and put four tires on? >> absolutely. you still have six sets for the race so youstarted a set on the car, five sets in the pits, you've used one of them and still havefour sets left with 95 laps to go, everybody

will come to pit road and put a set of tireson. >> and they are following denny hamlin. kelly. >> and you will see ty dillon in the 3 carmaking his way to pit road, a fast stop last time helped crack him into the top five. ty now saying that the right here rear issliding around a little too much, looking for more stability on exit, they are goingto make a track bar adjustment moving it down for him, also four tires and sunoco fuel. >> denny hamlin pretty happy with this racecar, an air pressure adjustment.

the 2 of paul menard they told him they wouldgive him a little more to lean on along with four tires and a fill of sunoco fuel. as for elliott sadler he said i feel likei'm using my right rear tire too much. air pressure adjustment for sadler. >> and the race off pit road a close one betweendenny hamlin, elliott sadler and ty dillon. hamlin wins that race off pit road. i use what's already inside me to reach mygoals. so i liked when my doctor told me that i mayreach my blood sugar and a1c goals by activating what's within me with once-weekly trulicity.

toyota driver update. early on in this one, 55 laps complete, dennyhamlin leading the race, daniel suarez, erik jones, j.j. yeley, dakoda armstrong running 20th. >> tomorrow sprint cup series racing righthere at darlington. race coverage begins at 6:00 p.m. eastern on nbc. joe gibbs racing subbing once again for daleearnhardt jr., has seven wins at darlington. he leads all the active drivers.

>> just a quick update on erik jones, thisis his first visit toit lady in black and it has not necessarily been a pleasant one. a lot of i don't knows, the car is loose, the car is wrecking loose, lots of frustration on the radio. jeff, what's it like coming to this placefor the first time? >> well, it's intimidating when you come herefor the first time but typically you have enough practice to kind of sort it out. with this only 50-minute practice it's verydifficult to go out and try stuff and do things as a driver and just work on you because you'rehaving to work on your car and get it the

way you want to get it so you're working onthe car and driver at the same time. the limited practice hurts with a new driver. >> this should be an interesting restart addselliott sadler will be on the outside, denny hamlin race leader has chose the inside line. that's always been the one that's moved. denny hamlin has had bad restarts to startthis race as they are back in the restart zone and this time the 18 of denny hamlina better restart. >> he did get a better restart but it seemedlike the 1 of elliott sadler was more successful on the outside lane than denny hamlin was.

>> now the 1 and 3 are racing to see who willget to turn two first. they don't want to be side-by-side. they still have side-by-side but elliott sadlerclearing down the back straightaway. >> elliott out front still side-by-side behindty dillon. regan smith down at the bottom of the racetrack. such history at this racetrack. built back in -- first race back in 1950. >> this is what's hard when you're talk beinga young driver of erik jones riding along with erik, this is what's so difficult thisb.

this racetrack, out by yourself is one thingbut now you're having to race these guys on a racetrack that does not have two grooves. the only way to learn is to go out and doit, go out and experience it, make some mistakes. we know erik jones how quick of a learnerhe is. i can promise you he will be better when hecomes back here next year than he was when he unloaded today. >> regan smith still trying that inside linewith the 7 now will slide up the racetrack. >> you see what happened, the 20 was not ableto turn down and be in the line he wanted to because the 19 of suarez was there.

lost his momentum and now suarez has pressureand the 20 almost in the wall but he used the high line on the exit of turn four, nicejob. for a guy that has never been here beforethat's doing a nice job knowing the racetrack and using it to your advantage. >> kyle larson saw that opening, he carriedthat momentum by the 19 of daniel suarez who lost two spots in that exchange. now the 42 of kyle larson is looking to theinside of erik jones. >> that's one of the things you have to payattention to at this racetrack. every time an opportunity presents itselfto pass, doesn't mean that's when you need

to pass. if you try to make a pass on somebody in anarea of the racetrack where your car is not very good their momentum will carry them byyou and you can lose more sports than you will potentially gain. understanding when to make that move likeright there, erik jones backing out of that move is a smart thing to do. had he not backed out he would have probablybeen in a wrack. >> kyle larson shoots around erik jones andkyle said i just need help exiting both two and four.

the car is way too tight. they feel like they're giving up too muchground early in a run. they feel like they can catch people laterin the run but giving up too much ground early on although kyle is making progress there. you have had cars like that at darlington, haven't you, jeff, not very good on the front of the run but pays off because you have tobe gooded on older tires at darlington. larson going for another spot right there. >> same move we saw denny hamlin use to takethe lead. yes, i would -- i like a car that's good onthe long run and the short run, it's hard

to do that here. if i have my choice i'm going to take onegood on the long run because that's when you see the variance in speed and can make a lotof time up. >> you want to have a car that's good allthe time. >> yes. >> i noticed that, too, he wants a car thatruns well at the beginning and end of the run. >> that's why he won so many races. the 42 of kyle larson is interesting, martysaid he needs better drive off the corner.

i believe the 42 does a good job of not overdrivingthe entry. watch how all four cars carry different entriesspeeds, the 3 and 22 close up on one another getting into the corner. that's not where you make up the speed, it'swho can get back to the gas sooner and carry the momentum off the corner. >> that off the corner speed is a lot of timesgenerated by your entry speed. i know that sounds crazy but if you get intothe corner correctly it really helps line your car up. suarez making a move on the 3 of ty dillon.

ty is having an issue, going backwards forsure. >> he will drop back to ninth now, tryingto stay in the top ten. denny hamlin, elliott sadler, paul menard, justin allgaier and erik jones the top five. >> and an update on brennan poole, anotherguy making his first visit to darlington. he prepared by looking at in car camera fromkyle larson earlier this week. he told us that he learned quite a few things, where to lift, where to brake, who you to enter the corner and especially he noticedhow kyle larson sets up a pass. that's something that brennan has been usingthroughout the course of the day, a pretty solid run so far.

larson was trying to run a little bit higherto help his exit of turn two, he had used that run -- that move a few laps before andit worked really well for him but that time he got a little too high. you see what happens when you catch a lapcar on the exit of turn two, the 7 of allgaier had no choice but no slow up, the 20 did areally good behind him of not getting into the back of him. >> and that replay we saw the 42 gets in thefence, he was still the third fastest car on the racetrack. just because you have a darlington stripedoesn't mean it's going to slow your car down,

it hasn't slowed down this 42, he is closingin on the second place car of elliott sadler. >> and he only knows one speed, he's goingto aggressively go after this racetrack. he's going to have -- he's going to have scuffsand marks on his race car when it's over. he is not afraid to scrape the wall or drivethe car loose. let's see if that works for him for the wholerace but he has a fast race car, he has now gotten himself up to third, he started inthe back because of points. kyle larson is all the way up to third. >> the driver that has never finished outsidethe top ten in either the xfinity series or the cup series at this racetrack.

that's kevin doing the asking, elliott respondedback, not any worse than the other cars, just a simple darlington stripe, marty. >> dave, the darlington stripe tally for kylelarson back in third is up to three which matches his position on the racetrack rightnow, he told the team a few times i just need a little more front grip, again, giving uptoo much time at the beginning of the run and flirting with that wall every lap. there he is a little loose off the corneragain. >> they stride to help paul menard a coupleways, they opened up a naca duct, perhaps the guys can explain that a little further.

they also told him that the 18 and 42 arehauling butt up high. behind him the 22 of ryan blaney trying toget laps and experience here. what did he do before he got here, he watchedtape just like any player would do with his coach. they watched the leaders in traffic to seehow they managed it best. >>> erik jones another one of those guys whowatched tape, also spent time in a similarity this week trying to prepare for his firstrace at darlington. he took a cautious approach to practice today, something he doesn't normally do at an oval. he said i know this place is different.

he scrubbed the wall not too long ago andstill struggling to get a handle on this race car. >> last year the orange car driven by danielsuarez he finished -- started second, finished third and led 14 laps but he said what i learnedwas really about patience here. so far today his car was been very loose althougha little bit better on this last run. >> justin allgaier 7 car looks clean now butdid pick up a darlington stripe in practice because of the throwback scheme it has a wrapon it not paint so he used a razor blade to peel away places of that and put the schemeback together. right now justin saying he is way too loosto do anything that the guys ahead of him

with doing. behind him ty dillon another car that haslost several spots since the restart he said he's way too loose. he said we are going to have to take a bigswing at it next stop. >> an brennan poole got out of the car completinghis first ever practice at darlington he said, man, that was really cool. love running at the top of the racetrack, that's what he's been doing today although he's been searching for the right line, tryingto find grip wherever he can, a place where he can run fast, pretty happy with the balanceof the race car, still has some ground to

>> i have a flat. >> should be on the left side, the rightsare good. >> my bad, guys, sorry. >> look, you cannot see the entrance of pitroad here, when you drive into turn three you can't see it, it's not until you get halfwaythrough the corner talk see it. if you wait to turn to get on pit road whenyou see the cone it's too late. you have to turn way before you can see itand, you know, some of that goes to only having 50 minutes of practice and not being ableto practice getting on pit road, but, you know, it's just a difficult pit road.

you see ryan blaney -->> trying to get to pit road. >> he got help. >> he was way slow getting on pit road, theguys behind him did not know he was getting on pit road and they ran into the back ofhim. >> i hope some of the sprint cup guys arewatching this race. that's one of them right there, sprint cupguy and he did this last year, did it again this year, that's just how hard this pit roadis, marty. >> here is the other problem, he thinks hehas a flat on the left side so he's trying to nurse this car back around.

he is still in position here that if theyleave pit road he still has a shot to win this thing but you can see all the darlingtonstripes he has on the right side as well. so a lot of damage on this 42 car but stillin contention as long as everything goes well on this stop. >> he's going to have to have everything gowell but the issue he's going to have is that some cars that have already made their pitstop are on the lead lap. he's definitely going to lose positions toabout six cars that will stay on the racetrack. >> you heard him say he had a flat tire, youhope the tire doesn't come apart while he's riding around waiting to get on pit road andthe tire comes apart and damages the car,

that's another issue they could have. >> almost every race here we see a car misspit road, have a problem on pit road. it's something as a driver when you come hereyou have to be aware of it. you have to just -->> you would think he would be aware of it since he did it last year. >> you have to get on pit road way slowerhere than everywhere else you go. it's all about turning early, getting thecar slowed down and just give a little bit of speed up. you can't do it here like you do it at michigan, like you do it at most racetracks.

>> friday night xfinity series will be atrichmond. coverage beginning at 7:00 p.m. eastern on nbcsn. here goes chase elliott with the checkeredflag. out front for the most laps is denny hamlin, led 43, elliott sadler led 39, kyle larson had led 12 before trying to come to pit roadthere and spinning. ryan blaney scored as the race leader in the22, brennan poole second, kyle larson third. we go nascar nonstop. marco...!

polo! si? scusa? ma io son marco polo, ma... playing "marco polo" with marco polo? surprising. ragazzini, io son marco polo. si, son qui... what's not surprising?

how much money amanda and keith saved by switchingto geico. ahhh... polo. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percentor more. this is the ford f-150. the only pick-up with a high strength, military-grade,aluminum-alloy body. of all the full-size, half ton pickups, it'sgot the most towing, the best payload and the highest gas mileage. plus, no body rust.

and guess what? this is the safest f-150 ever built. the only pickup to pull the government's 5-starsafety rating and earn an iihs top safety pick. this is the f-150. and ford f-series is the undisputed truckleader for 39 straight years. i used to ask if you could hear me now, buti switched to sprint. >>> back at darlington, pit stops under way, kyle larson top right of your screen they did not have to fix anything on that car, just four fresh tires on it and send him on

his way. >> jeremy clements said he was a little bittight through the center, they will raise the track bar, four tires for jeremy clements. >> ryan blaney will be here for an extendedperiod of time. josh williams the spotter radioed to the crewsaid you need to work not just on the right rear but the left rear as well that's wherethe focus is right now. >> see the race off pit road and we go backto nascar nonstop. kyle busch, the 2015 champion! >>> carl edwards was down but he was neverout.

add his name to the legends at darlington. >> this is awesome. way to go, team. whoo. >> we made it carlington for a couple of moments. >> carl edwards came from two laps down ayear ago to win. tomorrow sprint cup series racing from darlington,it's throwback time. race coverage beginning at 6:00 p.m. >> rick, we have had quite the series of eventshere.

so kyle larson the race leader when greenflag pit stops started spun coming into pit road with just a little over a second lead. here is the 42 trying to come to pit road. at this point he is in trouble, he has missedthe pit road entry, losing time, but the saving grace this spin was not going to cause a yellow. as he's sitting here trying to get going backthe right direction the 22, i believe, is coming to pit road, jeff, we both think he'slift to go come to pit road, he gets run into causing an accident on the racetrack. that creates a yellow flag condition actuallysaving kyle larson time.

so kyle larson pits, come off of pit road, now he's going to start fifth which is behind the other -- or, excuse me, yeah, fifth behindthe four cars that pitted under green flag. >> through all of that they gained a spoton pit road. let's talk to his crew chief. do you feel like you dodged one there? >> yeah, he's giving everything he can, wejust want to with inn this great race in darlington >> i asked him any concern with the body damageon the right side and he has had three darlington stripes today, he said, no, the car is builtfor that. we're ready for it.

>> they plan for the darlington stripe. let's listen into the radio. >> get right back in rhythm here, still haveplenty of time to get up front, just get by these cars as soon as you can, we'll get thelead and start cruising it. >> these guys came in and put on tires, theyhave absolutely no hard corners, no laps, anything on their tires. everybody in front of them pitted before them. they may only have run one lap or one corner, but still here that makes a difference. so even though it's not a lot of laps, kylelarson without a doubt has the best tires

on his race car right now. >> seemed to be the fastest car on the racetrackwhen the green flag pit stops were taking place. >> and on a longer run. only 37 to go. he has to make some hay right now. >> brendan gaughan was too fast on pit roadso he will be serving that penalty. denny hamlin, elliott sadler, green flag backin the air! >> elliott sadler with a good start.

keep talking about give and take going intoturn one with 37 to go. how about kyle larson three wide around thebottom. >> race for the lead up top, elliott sadlertrying to get by denny hamlin. he will make the pass! >> that was because of the start he got. he entered side-by-side into one, he had tocarry that speed through the middle of one and two, that's what i a loud him to takethe lead. how fast can kyle larson get through thisfield. his car is better on the long run.

kyle larson up to fourth. elliott sadler running a little bit lowerline than everyone else. >> elliott sadler has to know that kyle larsonback there in fourth might be his biggest competition. he likes the fact that he doesn't get easilyup through traffic to use those fresher tires. >> larson running fourth, elliott sadler, denny hamlin, daniel suarez in front of him. suarez running the high line early in thislate race run. 35, now 34 laps to go. four cars have separated themselves from thepack.

>> once again you see early in in run kylelarson is giving up a little bit of time, with 34 to go you can't get too far back,we've seen how fast he is on long run but you get too far back you will not have enoughtime to catch them. >> jeff, 34 to go still are quite a few lapsat darlington. denny hamlin back in second, daniel suarezin third, denny hamlin the veteran sprint cup driver is he saving a little bit of reartire right now letting elliott sadler go out and burn his stuff or is he running as hardas he can trying to get to the lead? >> daniel suarez is doing a really good job,you mentioned a young driver following a cup veteran, denny has won a lot of races here.

great opportunity to learn a lot, suarez hasdone a good job of adapting to these cars over the last several years, just keeps improvingand keeps imp sing. >> daniel suarez 24-year-old out of montereymexico, running third, already has a win this season at michigan earlier. >> there's some other cars in the top tenthat have put to get great racing. jeremy clements in the seventh position hasrun a nice smooth race. we talk about how difficult darlington is,from right down the street, in spar ten berg, south carolina, family run racing operationrunning in the seventh position. >> when you say family run this family hasbeen involved with nascar for a long, long

time. actually jeremy's great-grandfather -- grandfathercrawford and uncle built engines for the black widow which ran in the 1950s and that's thethrowback scheme that he has had on this car. >> jerry clements the chase bubble minus 28he has to have good runs, we are going to cut the field to 12 for the xfinity chasein three weeks. >> another guy having a good run is j.j. yeley, also the 01 of ryan preece having areally good run. those guys sitting there running tenth. so really good run for these guys as well.

>> ryan preece having a very nice run currentlyin the tenth position and they are one of the teams that pitted under the last cautionso they gained some track position on those guys who pitted under green and in his lasttwo races for ryan preece we see a battle further up front right now. >> you saw ryan preece wave out the window. the 2 up into the wall. paul menard after he went by ryan preece gotup into the wall so preece takes a spot back. ryan preece honoring butch lilly a great shorttrack racer, really cool bag back in time. you see a good battle here.

>> denny hamlin trying to hold off danielsuarez. suarez running that low line will take thespot away from denny. >> kind of a slide job right there, dennyhamlin trying to cross him over, suarez carried a lot of speed into the corner, got in frontof the 18 but was not able to hold his line and denny stayed aggressive. they will go side-by-side into one. >> now suarez will have the advantage. >> this is impressive. this is only the second start for daniel suarezhere at darlington.

he ran third last year trying to improve onthat currently in the second position. >> he was able to get by denny hamlin, 28laps to go. take a look at this close call. >> he drove it into the corner, just couldnot hold his speed, got into the wall. pretty good contact right there. >> see paul menard. >> elliott sadler has almost a second leadover daniel suarez who has just taken second away from denny hamlin. elliott sadler showing the way around darlingtonraceway.

[ clock ticking ] time. you only have so much. that's why we want to make sure you won'thave to wait on hold. and you won't have to guess when we'll turnup. because after all we should fit into yourlife. not the other way around. [ tires screech ] flo:[ ghost voice ] oooo! [ laughs ] jaaaaamie, the name your pricetool can show you coverage options to fit your budget.

tell me something i don't know -- oh-- ohhh! ahh! this is probably more of a breakroom activity. ya think? >>> daniel suarez has closed the gap betweenhe and race leader elliott sadler. 0.3 of a second separating the top two. daniel suarez one win on the season. >> you see right there -->> you know you're better than this 1 car, just be patient here.

he will come back to you. race smooth, race the track. >> i like that confidence over the radio. 21 laps to go you don't have to push so muchthat you get in the wall yourself. the 1 sees you, he sees you out his mirror, keeping putting the pressure on him and see if you can force elliott sadler into a mistake. >> you're a young driver, you want to windarlington. this is a huge race to win. so it's easy to say take it easy, from a driveryou're hearing 20 to go that means, man, it's

almost over, i have to go and push. it's a fine line between pushing too hardand not pushing hard enough. >> even the mexican born driver can understandthe appreciate the magnitude of winning at a place like darlington. so much history in this racetrack. but you see it everywhere. especially in the garage with 17 hall of famershere to watch this race. >> another issue daniel suarez might haveisn't that it's 19 to go but the 4 of 2 kyle larson the last two laps has run faster thanall three cars in front of him.

it seems like his chassis is coming in. with 19 could go i wouldn't want to stay tooclose to the 42, i would want to try to clear the field. >> either the first or second fastest carpretty much over the last eight laps or so, larson coming like he has been all afternoonlong, very good at the end of the run, suarez gets in the wall a ail lit. larson says his car is a little too tight. they went up on the track bar and took a roundof wedge out, but clearly very quick. >> kyle larson is the problem for larson, not enough laps left in this race.

>> yeah, but you just heard marty say the19 getting into the wall, i believe the 19 made pretty hard contact exiting turn four, that is heavy contact with both right sides and seemed to have hurt the speed of the 19as he loses touch a little bit with the 1 of elliott sadler. >> trying to stay in front of denny hamlinbut that could be harder than he thinks as he's holding on to second but denny hamlincoming. >> i think elliott sadler wants suarez tobe able to run just fast enough. you can see he got really loose off the corner. >> there's the pass for second, denny hamlintakes it away from daniel suarez.

>> i agree with you, jeff, that's not whatelliott sadler wants to see. he was hoping that either denny hamlin andkyle larson would be held up by the 19 car. >> hamlin not held up, now the gap betweenelliott sadler and denny hamlin 1.2 seconds. >> remember how much experience elliott sadlerhas, he is an xfinity regular but he ran in the cup series full time for a long time,he has a lot of experience, elliott sadler is not -- even if you have a little fastercar, hamlin can run him down it's not going an easy pass, elliott sadler will put up thefight. he has the skill and experience to put thatfight up as well. >> it's been interesting to watch these twobattle.

after practice guess who sat down and talked, the rookie daniel suarez and the four time winner here denny hamlin. hamlin gave him ideas on what he saw in practice, also helped the 19 team with ideas he thought he might be good speedwise. obviously daniel has gotten into the walland denny is back around but teammates sharing information. >> when you talk about teammates the car rightbehind denny hamlin is kyle larson. his partner is poole. a little bit of good fortune those green flagcycles and timely caution but doing a good

time of holding on to the fifth position. >> what a remarkable run for brennan poole. after yesterday's experience outside of theracetrack he wasn't expecting big things for the weekend. what i'm referring to is in the middle ofthe hurricane rains in darlington he had a dead battery in his par injury car, he hadto change it out in the driving rain. the car that he's driving now full power andmoving forward the front, running inside the top five right now, no adjustments on thelast pit stop, that's just how good that car is.

>> now with only 13 laps to go, brennan pooletop five, elliott sadler probably liking what he's seeing, he's got a pretty good gap. >> do not look in that mirror, hit your marks. race that racetrack. >> he's got a pretty good gap on denny hamlin, just under a second. >> so tell me as a driver is that like don'tlook down and the first thing you do is look down when they say don't look in your mirroris that the first thing you do. >> that's his spotter, he has a lot of trustin brett, he has known him for a long time. when you have a spotter that you believe inand he says just pay attention out of the

windshield not look in the mirror you're moreapt to do that. that's good advice, it's another thing todo it, though, when you have a guy like denny hamlin that's so accomplished, you know, hascontended for cup championships, won a lot of races you have that guy behind him it'shard not to take notice of that. with 11 to go you do have to race the racetrackbut you have to do it at the pace that keeps hamlin behind you. you don't want to let him get close becausewe've seen what lap traffic can do, a car that can get within two car lengths that meansthat a guy can get by you. you have to push right here.

>> coming to ten to go. >> coming to ten to go, elliott sadler outin front has never won in the xfinity series here at darlington. two second place finishes, most recent backin 2014. now the gap between the top two 0.8 of a second. as we close in on the final laps, the passfor the win has been with three or less to go here in three of the last four races. >> stretching it out wig time. settle this thing.

stay focused. >> you talk about it you hear him say racethe racetrack but to race this racetrack you have to do it right against the wall. you have to be -- you know, you have to driveinto one, go to that throttle, put the car right against the wall to make the lap timeyou need. so even though you have a good lead and youmaybe hope to be able to take it a little bit easy you can't take it easy because thefast line is right against the wall. >> huge lead. over a second again.

>> left side of your screen two first timers, brennan poole and erik jones battling for the fifth position. i keep having a hard time saying this is erikjones's first time at darlington with all that he has accomplished. >> battle for the lead still remaining about0.7 of a second, the battle for fifth quite a bit closer. >> you see the lap traffic and that is -- thatis going to make a difference in this race. if you catch lap traffic at the wrong timeyou could lose almost a second. i mean, the guy behind you can catch you reallyquickly.

so got to time it right. sometimes you may have to slow down a littlebit so that you don't catch that guy at the wrong place. >> and there's more traffic coming for the1 of elliott sadler. you're going to see two or three more lapcars, it will be all about how he catches them, are these cars going to let him through? >> under seven laps to go for elliott sadler. trying to hold off denny hamlin who has wonhere four times in the xfinity series. >> and now they're three wide in front ofthe leader.

>> nascar will display the white flag or,excuse me, a blue flag with a yellow stripe through it and that's indicating for driversto move over as the battle for the lead continues. elliott sadler continuing to work his wayaround the lap traffic. that pass going by dakoda armstrong. >> luckily for elliott sadler the 18 of dennyhamlin is having just as much or maybe more trouble with the lap traffic. >> now lap traffic taking both lines arounddarlington. denny hamlin stuck behind. >> these guys racing for the lead you justhope and expect that these guys -- just get

out of the way, just go to the bottom laneand let them go. it's not your day today, you are not goingto race for the win, don't get in the middle of this race, just get out of the way. >> that's the situation denny hamlin has togo below dakoda armstrong to get back with no cars between he and elliott sadler. under five laps to go. >> now, listen, dakoda armstrong and blackkoch are running 19th and 20th and racing for position so it is a difficult spot tobe in, but the race for the win is more important and you have to understand that, again, it'snot your day, you know, try to get out of

the way, at the same time race, don't tryto give up your spot but more importantly is what's going on with the leaders. >> paul menard had a flat tire so he was makinghis way on to pit road to fix that. the gap for the lead over 1 second. under four laps to go. one main financial the sponsor for elliottsadler. had mentioned before that at the end of theseason they would stosponsorship and get out of the sport and then just recently they changedand said, do you know what, not only are we going to continue to stay in the sport butwe're going to go another year.

>> that last lap elliott sadler lot 0.35 ofa second to denny hamlin. it's going to come down to who has the bettercar. that last lap it was denny hamlin. >> elliott sadler being told by his spotterdon't look in your mirror, hit your marks. >> two more. >> two more times around at darlington. >> another 0.2. >> 0.7 of a second separating the top two,can hamlin catch him? up into the wall the 1 may have a tire goingdown.

a shot there as he got up into the wall gettingout of turn two and around the 18 will go. denny hamlin trying to get by the 1. the 1 back by. a little smoke coming out of the back. one lap to go. sponsored by credit one bank. >> this is where he had trouble last night, got into the corner, got into high on corner exit, got up into the debris. >> he runs low this time through one and twoand denny hamlin has caught him.

>> big run as they go down the backstretch. three and four is all that's left betweenelliott sadler and denny hamlin and the checkered flag. coming out of turn four elliott sadler 20years in the sport his first win at darlington! >> got exciting that one small mistake onthe exit of turn two gave denny opportunity. >> woo-hoo. hell, yeah. >> that's what it feels like to win at darlington. >> i love you guys.

thank you all so much. i've been wanting to win here for a long time, boys. >> that is elliott sadler's 12th career win. and you heard in his voice, i've been wantingto win here a long time. how about the darlington stripe that he gotwith two to go and looked like he had lost the race. got into the wall, denny hamlin took advantageof it, got to his inside, looked like he was going to make the pass, elliott sadler wouldhave nothing doing. >> as the smoke clears, elliott sadler willclimb out of the number 1, head over and grab

the checkered flag. >> look at the emotion out of elliott sadler. started racing nascar back in 1995, it's beenover 20 years that he has been a part of this sport and to win at such a historic iconicracetrack as darlington is, such a event. how about the last two laps? last moments of this race. >> you see elliott sadler everything looksgood, not much time to go in the race, as he enters turn three, we talked about this,it's easy to get around here but not quickly. he gets a little high right there and nowhe's in all the debris, all the tire rubber

that gets packed up against the wall and lookhow much speed comes out of the race car. >> they go down into turn three and the 1commits to the top of the racetrack, the 18 looks like he has the move but look how aggressivethe 1 is able to get out of the tlo throttle to clear the 18. i think he knows on the last lap the 1 doesa great job of defending. >> watch the 1 car. look at the gap. watch what the 1 car does this time as opposedto that look. look how low he is, he stays way away.

that slows his speed down so much that the18 has a big run, but smartly he says, do you know what, you're not going around meon the outside, he gives him the bottom of the racetrack, takes the line he prefers,he knows he can carry more speed off the exit of four, he trusts denny hamlin is not goingto run into the side of him. made one mistake but after that mistake hedid everything right to overcome it. >> a great win for elliott sadler. he will make his way to victory lane, a verycoveted place at darlington raceway, you can say you've won at darlington you have wonat one of the biggest tracks in all of nascar. elliott sadler wins in the xfinity seriesat darlington.

>>> at one of the most historic racetrackson the entire nascar circuit, elliott sadler the veteran finally finds himself in victorylane. he has raced here in the truck series, he'sraced here in sprint cup and in xfinity but he has never been able to find that checkeredflag first and with 15 laps -- oh, drink it in. yeah. drink it in. 15 laps to go you said this will be the longest15 laps of my life. >> before i answer any questions -->> i didn't ask you a question.

>> this is for dale earnhardt jr. my owner has given me one heck of an opportunitythis year and i know he's going through a lot this year. this is for you, my man. all these guys in the shop that work so hard, one main financial, lending made personal, it's come back to us for a multi-year deal. to win at darlington, i told you this morningthe stories of this place and myself, this paint scheme, dale jarrett riding shotgunwith me today. i've been want to go win a long time.

>> amanda and the children, come on in here, celebrate with dad, get a hug. this is awesome. dale jr. was going through your mind late in the race, what else was going through your mind? >> we've been through a lot the last monthor so and all the executives one main financial spoke about, they believe in this sport, theylove the fans in this sport and they believe in it and want to invest in it a couple moreyears and it meant the world to me. everybody at jr. motorsports have made mea kid again, gave me a great opportunity. for us to come in and win at darlington.

i threw one away before and almost threw thisone away. it's special, it's cool to do it on a throwbackpaint scheme. longest running sponsor, one main financial, thanks so much, it means the world to me. >> this is darlington, it is so hard to winhere. what did you go through today handling thatrace car? >> i watched a lot of videotape this weekand i called my crew chief and i told him, i said, i've got to change the way i drivethis track, denny hamlin whipped up here this last year and he can run so good up againstthe wall in three and four so i had to do that, i had to adjust my line, i had neverrun that high in years past.

i made some adjustments through the run andwas able to hold him off at the end. that's all that counts. i just -- i love these guys behind me, i justlove to put them in victory lane, means more to me than anything. >> the colors on this race car go back to2005. 23 times you started in 90 car and did havea victory. what does it mean to take this paint schemeto victory lane. >> one main financial and what they meantto their sport, all of our partners at jr. motorsports and two i met dale jarrett in1996 and he took time to teach a little kid

from virginia how to get around this racetrackand that's why his name is on the other side, he has meant a lot to me to my career notonly as a race car driver but also as a man. >> elliott sadler is a good listener and nowhe is a winner at darlington in the xfinity >> i think that emotion explains how big darlingtonis, this racetrack, winning here is just like winning nowhere else. the tradition here, all the things that havehappened here, the history, the heritage, it's darlington. it's just an incredible place and you wantto be a winner at the marquis racetracks in this sport.

>> well, you know, there can only be one winnerin nascar each week, 40 cars start, one car wins. we saw last week with a 24-year-old kyle larsonhow excited he is to get his first win at michigan and this week a 41-year-old elliottsadler, such a long career in both the sprint cup and the xfinity series and you still hearthe emotion. this is a driver that thought he was losinghis sponsor earlier this year, that has turned around, that was great news for him, has reallyfound a home at jr. motorsports to extend his creek, trying to get back to victory lane, not just back to victory lane but back to victory lane here at darlington.

for a guy that has accomplished so much inhis career it's quite surprisingly just the emotion from an xfinity series win. >> and a 41-year-old that's willing to learn. a 41-year-old that said, hey, how can i dothis he talked about dale jarrett helping him years ago but even still today years laterwhat can i do better? how can i learn? what can i do? watches a lot of videotape and saying i needto do something better. that's the sign of someone that wants to besuccessful.

>> rick, you told us that story this weekon "nascar america," we talked to elliott before coming here, he was excited about thispaint scheme and explained that whole story about coming here and it was great becausewe got to hear dale's side as well and he explained elliott said he came here, dalejarrett was practicing for one of the biggest races to try to win the winston million andhe took time out of his way to take elliott out on the racetrack to find out where hehad to run. fast forward all these years later they goto victory lane together, one on the left side of the car, one on the right. >> elliott sadler at the time was just a 21-year-oldand you look at him now and you would say

that's the emotions of a 21-year-old. winning at darlington and it means so much. it means so much to this driver to be ableto get the win at darlington. >> the spotter long time friend right there. you know, i think, too, i think at 41 winsmean more to you. you know that you are not going to race intoyour 50s and so you realize that as you are -- not that elliott's career is getting readyto end but he had a scare. a month ago he thought that his deal was over. there was no sponsorship.

so he saw the end of his opportunity potentiallystaring right in front of him and one main made the decision to come back, stay in insport, now he is rejuvenated, wins one of the biggest races of the year. what a great day. >> what's going to be fun is elliott sadleris going to join dale jarrett on the post race show here in just a few moments. denny hamlin finishing second, just momentsago was able to talk with mike massaro about that finish. >> another very impressive run for denny hamlinhere in darlington, second, but i know, man,

you could taste that victory. there was an opportunity when sadler got inthe wall, how were you trying to take advantage of it? >> you know, i knew his car was going to getreally tight after he hit the wall there. i kind of beat up our right side a littlebit on that run, just probably my fault, i told, you know, chris, the crew chief, hehad to do something to tighten us up if we had to race anybody and we just overdid itand i was plowing tight that last run and i got -- it wasn't good on restarts, you know, all that -- all that means we finished second. but congratulations to elliott sadler, youknow, it's -- tried to win it for sport clips,

help a hero, they do a lot for this weekendand for our military, thank gordon for that and, you know, just came up short. i really would have liked to have got a winhere, but we will have to wait until next year. >> denny hamlin does come up a little short, but still another very strong run as he comes home second. >> take a look at the chase standings withtwo races to go before the chase now elliott sadler with two wins, erik jones three, danielsuarez one. the top nine have clinched a chase spot.

means that they can't fall out of the top12 pointswise but that still means that there are three spots that will be fought for tosee who can get into the chase. >> you see why dakoda armstrong was racingso strong, only 18 points out of t we talked about trying to get out of the way the leaderis coming, but, you know, racing for that last spot you have to stay aggressive. >> only two races. two races from now they will set the chasegrid. >> what an impressive run, though, for elliottsadler. able to fight off the late charge by dennyhamlin.

it's time for our post race show. let's go to krista, kyle and dj. >> thank you, rick. sports is about seizing moments and that iswhat elliott sadler did today. when that checkered flag fell he screamed,he told his team he loved them and then as he climbed out of the car he grabbed his headwith both hands shaking it in disbelief. he grew up just less than three and a halfhours from here in virginia, elliott sadler, 41 years old wins at the track he said he'sbeen trying and wanting to for so long. i don't know if it just gets better than that.

the only way it could as we join us from ourpost race set here at darlington, krista voda alongside kyle petty and dale jarrett, theonly way it gets better is if he takes one of us along for the ride which he did, dalejarrett your name on the car with elliott sadler. edema nl words about that friendship. we know who up it means to you. >> a little tough to you can at that. i appreciate all of that, but i told you beforethis race started on our show to watch this 1 car with elliott sadler, he's really goodhere, his driving style fits this, but we

also heard him talk about having to make anadjustment because the last year or so that has cost him at times, but that's just a veterandriver understanding what he needs to do and he is so good. really happy to see him. we can't play favorites sitting here, butwhen you have a really one of your best friends in the world go out and do something thatyou know is special and to know how difficult it is to get that victory here really meansa lot and for this to come on the heels of signing a two year extension with one mainfinancial, a lot of good things happening for a really good person there.

>> i think what he said, you know, obviouslyhe's 41 years old. if he had done this at another racetrack i'mnot sure we would have seen the emotion. this is darlington. let's go ahead and say that. we heard denny speak about it, we've spokenabout it so much leading up to this race. but i think a lot of that emotion goes towardsthis man right here. when this kid was 21 years old when dale jarrettwas racing for the rihn ston million he crawls up in a truck and says how do i get aroundthis place, this guy, a champion takes the time and that kid that's 41 years old nowremembers it all these years later.

that's what this sport is all about, thisgeneration helping the next generation, helping the next generation, we're seeing it in thexfinity series and in the cup series, it's because of champions like this guy, he won'tspeak to it but because of champions like dale jarrett that guys like elliott sadlerhave had careers and flourished. >> i told him what harry gant had told me. i'd like to i can is that a lot of creditbut harry gant took the time when i was down here my first time. >> pass it on. >> that's the kind of things you look forwhen you are a young driver coming here for

the first time because it's very intimidating. you hear about it and you show up and realizeit's way more difficult that happen what anyone could ever have told you that it was. i was glad to help out elliott but he hastaken it to a whole another level so many times and happy for him today. >> pay it forward. >> let's talk to the winner of today's xfinityseries race, a winner and i know elliott sadler this is going to sound so good to hear, awinner at darlington. congratulations.

dj was going nuts up here watching that. >> thank you guys so much. it's -- you know how much history this trackhas and i've been coming here a long time since i was a kid, coming here as a crew memberfor my brother hermie and years later as a driver. to finally get in victory lane in in placeon a throwback weekend means more so me than anything. to beat somebody like a denny hamlin thathas won so many races here, i can't tell you how emotional it is.

my wife and family, kids are here with me. it's a great weekend. >> elliott, a little less than two to go itlooked like you got a little bit into the gas a little too hard over in one and two. did you think that you had lost it or didyou just stay focused and knew what you had to do when you got to turn three. >> i started focusing on the lap cars in frontof me and i took my eye off of where i was for just a split second and you run so closeto the wall here i got up into it and then brett did a good job of letting me know wheredenny was.

i knew if i could keep denny underme i hadto go in the corner really hard, try to hold him down and make him pass me on the bottom. great job by my spotter. i almost messed up but i had such a good cari could hold it in front the last couple happens. this is for dale jr. and what he's going through right now, heand kelly, mr. hendrick has given us straight a great opportunity. for us to come here and win at this time ofyear to get ready for the chase i think shows everybody we're ready to go.

>> elliott, congratulations, first and foremost, but there are so many facets of the emotional impact of this victory. you talk about dale and kelly and you talkabout mr. hendrick and you talk about the team and you talk about one main financialand where you were a month ago. i'm going to tell you something, sitting hereat this desk beside dale jarrett, the emotion that he showed when you crossed that start/finishline i thought there was emotion in victory lane, but speak a little bit to that day whenhe told you about getting around here and what your relationship is with this man becausei said it before, he just paid it forward to you, he said he got it from harry gantand paid it forward to you.

>> i came here in 1996 and dale was testingfor the winston million, he had five or six cars here, they were definitely focused onwhat they were doing, i said, mr. jarrett, my name is elliott sadler, here for the firsttime, anything you could tell me to help me around this track i would greatly appreciateit. he said i can do you one better than thatis correct get in my car and he showed me and really took his time with me and keptchecking on me during the day and i was thinking, man, this is a guy testing and for the winstonmillion, helping a guy, a little small town boy from virginia to get around this racetrack. years later being my teammate and somebodyso special to me.

dale knows what he means to me, not as a racecar driver on the racetrack but what he has meant to me as a man and mentor off the racetrack,he did it the best way possible that you could with the fans and the sponsors and i'm tryingto follow his lead. >> elliott, this victory getting you readyfor the chase coming up here. >> hello. hold on a second. >> hey, brother. hey. how about that.

i can't say that on tv, but, yes, sir. that's for you, my man. yes, sir. that's for you. all right. i know. i appreciate it, man. i'm going to call you back in a little bitand we're going to celebrate. you the man, man, you are my hero.

that's my bossman. >> that's always a bigger dale on the otherline for sure. >> we knew it when you said i can't say thaton tv. >> all of us that know him pretty close probablyknow what he just said. >> uh-huh. >> this is for him. listen, you guys documented what we've beenthrough the last month and to see one main financial come back on board, believe in oursport, believe in the nascar fans and for us being able to repay those guys and allthe partners on the car from jr. motorsports.

thank you for this opportunity. it's amazing. i can't believe it. >> elliott, i was asking you about the momentumnow for the chase. you've got to really look forward to thatand say this is your time to get that first championship in the xfinity series. >> yeah, we've kind of been ramping up thelast month, i think that showed today. today was a little bit closer in the samestep of the stars we will have when the chase starts.

we came here to test it out this weekend, for us to run as fast and good as we were off the truck and put it in in victory lanesets an example of where we are prepared for the chase. >> elliott, i know this is big but it's beena pretty big week for you, championship for your girl's softball team, right? >> i got a gatorade shower wednesday nightwith the championship with the girls and just a proud coach. i do want to say one more thing, my mom hasbeen going through a lot these last couple days.

mama, i love you very much and i will seeyou at church in the morning. >> we are all thinking of your mom. >> yeah, man. >> congrats, bud. >> thank you, guys. >> congratulations. you know, he said he was talking to the bossman, dale jr., you still see the excitement, we love seeing that. this is what dale earnhardt jr. tweeted literallymoments as the checkered flag fell.

i'm so proud of elliott sadler and jr. motorsports,a win at this track so tough to accomplish and there were some emojis. >> it really is special. like elliott talked about the sponsorshipangle, just a couple months ago wasn't sthur what would happen with his racing career, with the team, what a gift given to that spoons or, a win at darlington today. >> you know, i think jeff burton spoke ofit earlier. at 41 you are not sure how many more daysyou have in your career. days like this are sweet.

they're sweeter because it's darlington. they're sweeting because one main was chosento come back and if i have him another couple years of a dream that he has chased his wholelife. he knows he has a couple more years to comeback and do this. but to everything that's happened over thelast month, to come together and make this happen in victory lane is a pretty specialday. >> the whole year elliott has told me aboutwhat a great position he was in, he loved the people he was working with, really appreciateddale and kelly giving him this opportunity, it was so great and then to have what lookedlike kind of the rug going to be pulled out

from under him with the sponsorship goingaway, it got him down a little bit, but he was honest with his team and everyone aroundhim but then just continuing to work hard with the response or and they came aroundaround to understand and have all of that happen and get a win at darlington. >> here at this track that sits off harrybyrd highway there is just one main road that matters it's the one that leads to victorylane and elliott sadler found it today. and to think this could be just the warm up,throwback weekend, the southern 500 tomorrow, we will talk about that next. [ laughter ] practice went ok, but if he keepspushing like that, what're you gonna do?

>>> nascar is the throwing it back in darlington, drivers embracing the spirit of the '70s and early '80s with sprint cup racing from darlingtontomorrow at 6:00 eastern that's where you will find us on nbc. >> one, two, one, two. >> it's weird, seeing all these differentschemes. >> tough job. >> oh, yeah. it's going to be fun. >> okay.

best dressed in the garage could be the 14team with the pants but i just saw stump the truck driver, he fits the part for sure. >> hello, matt. >> if you call the wrong car this weekendi'm going to be concerned. >> you and me both. >> did you study up on your race cars? >> there is a white car some number on itdriving by you, two car, i mean three car, 33, whatever. >> jeffrey said he had to spot that car backin the day.

>> that's funny. >> what's also funny are the uniforms. >> where's your mandated uniform? >> nobody ever sent me one. >> how do you pick your favorite part? is it the cars? they look good, the uniforms, the signage, the programs, the tickets, the prices for the concessions, it's all going back to the'70s and '80s. >> it's tough to pick what your favorite thingis.

last year we saw the wood brothers go overthe top on everything they did. everything followed the wood brothers andfollowed suit with those guys this year, you saw tony stewart's uniforms, you've seen thecars, i don't know how the spotters will do it because so many cars are so radically differentthan anything you usually see. >> it is a big adjustment and you don't thinkabout that until you get here. you think everything is great, we see thesepaint schemes and everything. as a driver you're getting used to lookingin your mirror and seeing something and the spotters are doing the same thing. it takes a little bit of an adjustment there, but everything is well worth it.

this is a spectacular weekend, off to greatstart and tomorrow will be even better. >> when you turn your tv on tomorrow and theolder nbc peacock comes up and you start seeing these old paint schemes it's not 1984, okay. this is the 2016 southern 500. it's just throwback city down there. >> on nbc we will be having old retro logos, graphics, the music will be from the '70s and '80s. yes, it's a part performance what guess onon the racetrack but it's a party, a pageant and nobody throws a party better than darlington.

it's going to be a lot of fun. >> yes, it will. >> join us at 6:00 p.m. >> there is a little something up for grabs, that being a couple spots left in the chase playoff picture. there you see 13 drivers in on their wins,so there's 16 total that will make it into the playoffs, chase elliott, austin dillon, jamie mcmurray own those spots for now. >> we saw today in today's race if you watchedthat kyle larson the leader of the race trying to get on to pit road today.

>> spun. we've seen that many times in the cup series. it's a difficult pit road to get on. so all of these points and my point is thatthat can all change in a hurry and as much as we look at those and what ryan newman sittingon the outside or what he thinks is the outside, that is if chris buescher is able to havea good enough day to stay inside the top 30. there is a lot of moving parts there. >> and last week, i mean, we talked aboutit so much two and three weeks ago, kyle larson lost 25 points on the last lap of the race.

okay. austin dillon last week didn't do anythingbut ran his regular race, kyle larson a brand new winner wins, he goes from 55 point cushionand loses almost 35 points just because kyle larson wins. this last three spots are up for grabs withnew winners, with new things going on, you can't just go out there and run your regularrace and expect to point your way in, you have to make something happen. >> i think that's the key. and trying to make something happen here isa dangerous situation.

so as aggressive as what you want to be andknow that you have to be because you have to be on the offensive side here, you stillhave to guard from not tearing up your race car to the point that you can't run and runhard whenever you need to. so that's a real fine balance and we're talkingabout a number of young drivers that haven't experienced that many races here in a verytough situation. >> and you mentioned today's race we saw itwith jeremy clements, a great race today for ryan preece as well who finds himself 16th. remember, in the xfinity series only 12 moveon. tomorrow guys fighting for those final 16spots.

you see the cool cars right here in frontof our set, we're spoiled, we have eye candy. but you two didn't just get to look at them, you were driving two of these cars here today. >> i was fortunate, i got to drive my dad'scar and my man here drove benny parsons' 1973 championship car. >> this was great. number 72 chevrolet. it was so much fun. to think what benny par son accomplished goinginto the hall of fame, but what he was able to accomplish that year.

just to get back out on this racetrack wasfun but to drive that car, one of the cars that he raced that that championship seasona lot of fun to be out with kp and jeff burton. >> you see the in car cameras tomorrow, youwill barely get to see the top of the drivers head, you could see dale and i from the waistup. you can see the steering wheel and gauges. it's truly amazing to set in a car from 1972,'73, '74 and then look at that nbc toyota that jeff burton does our laps in, to seethe difference in safety, to see how the technology has changed, but it was a lot of fun to goout there and ride around, have burton behind us, dale and i talking back and forth betweencars and just experience what it was like

to be richard betty or benny parsons for justa short period of time at darlington. >> just to get your mind on the fact thatyou look inside there just how simple it was then. you know, those cars were along the time thatkyle and i were building cars and learning about them and starting to drive. you see how simple they were. then to look at jeff burton's car and seeeverything and all the technology is just unbelievable. to think about those cars and the difficultythose droo i was had.

they wear gloves, the steering wheels werecrapped with tape so your hands were for up after a 500 mile race here. to think about the challenge that the drivershave tomorrow is a totally different challenge. they have a lot safer things inside theirrace cars and the technology of their cars is incredible but that technology makes themrun extreme speeds around this which only increases the difficulty of this racetrack. >> it's crazy. it's a racetrack designed for 100 mile anhour speeds and you run at 170, and 180 mile an hour here.

what it really gives you an appreciation for,and i think each generation likes to think, man, i'm tough, i'm tough as nails. let me tell you something, the guys that setin those cars and wheel it around this racetrack back in the '60s and '70s tough as nails. they named the garage area after cale yarborough, probably the toughest guy going. >> cale yarborough grew up near buy, a five-timewinner in the southern 500. normally the drivers are the stars, they stillare, each generation's heroes, but these cars that you are going to see tomorrow, prettycool, too. we will talk about that and more when we return.

sir, this alien life form is growing at analarming rate. growing fast, you say? we can't contain it any long... oh! you know, that reminds me of how geico's beenthe fastest-growing auto insurer for over 10 years straight. over ten years? mhm, geico's the company your friends andneighbors trust. and deservedly so.

indeed. geico. expect great savings and a whole lot more. >>> it's not just the drivers getting in onthe throwback theme, check out the crew members for tony stewart's team. love these pants. they were wearing them all day in the garageand they are not the only ones. >> not the only ones. wait a minute.

i'm connected to my chair. i got my pants as you can see my pants. can you see my pants? >> head to toe. >> got my suit. >> are you their pr person? >> i'm working for tony this week. >> yeah, looking good, too. >> here is my pants, you can't see them, story,i can't stand up i'm connected to the cha

i remember shoo kyle has been wearing thosepants all day, too. >> once you commit you have to commit. i wore them to the racetrack this morning. >> first thing i saw when i came in the gate. >> how do you like me now? last year was the first year for the throwback, what brought it back was the fact that nascar brought the southern 500 back to labor dayweekend, nascar bringing the traditional race back home. this year they have taken and just run withit.

>> it's been incredible. it's just amazing all the teemts getting involvedjust a lot of fun. >> every team, every sponsor, we are goingto see old commercials tomorrow old style racing, it will be throwback tomorrow. >> got to be a part of it. you will have a front row seat beginning at6:00 p.m. coming up next on nbc except on the west coastit's your local news. america's got talent then all new episodesof aquarius. now at 6 -- breaking news of a shooting innorh char
